The biomass balance approach

Reduce CO2 emissions and save fossil raw materials in the production of styrenic foams

With the REDcert-certified biomass balance (BMB) approach, fossil resources needed to produce the styrenic foams can be replaced 100% by renewable raw materials. This production method saves valuable resources while reducing the CO2 impact. The biomass-balanced products Styropor® BMB, Neopor® BMB and Styrodur® BMB protect the environment and climate without sacrificing the usual quality: This is because they are unchanged from their fossil counterparts in terms of formulation and properties.

Sustainable Construction with BMB

Neopor® BMB

The use of renewable raw materials reduces the carbon footprint of Neopor® BMB by 90% compared to traditionally produced Neopor®.

The central CO2 saving of Neopor® results during its many years of use as insulation boards on the facade, reducing the energy required to heat or cool buildings and thus simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Styrodur® BMB

During the production of Styrodur® BMB, BASF avoids 67% CO2 emissions compared to conventional production.

The technical properties of the biomass-balanced sheets remain the same as those of conventional Styrodur®

BASF's biomass balance products

The approach is applied to many BASF products, such as superabsorbents, dispersions, plastics and intermediates. The resulting biomass balanced products offer BASF customers a differentiation opportunity such as a quantifiably improved CO2 footprint and savings of fossil resources. Customers can rely on the identical product quality and performance to which they are accustomed to and benefit from a sustainable drop-in solution, making a conscious contribution to environmental protection.
